Vinny is a top class goalkeeper and player underage for Ireland as well as having a spell at Wrexham in the english league. Usually Vinny plays outfield for St. Maurs where he uses his height to good effect. Vinny's father Pat "Borris" Whelan played for St. Maurs for many years and Vinny's grandfather the late Raymond played intercounty for Cavan. Vinny's brother Nicky is also on the St. Maurs senior team and chances are he will also wear the sky blue of Dublin.
